KERALA- 'God's Own Country'
Throughout its history, Kerala has been a center of trade and commerce in South Asia, where India is located. Many of its cities are on the coast. Meanwhile, the Western Ghats mountain chain rises on the eastern edge of Kerala, serving as a border that isolates Kerala somewhat from the rest of India.
There is some debate over the exact origin of the name Kerala, which in the ancient period was known as Keralam. One theory argues it originates from the Chera dynasty, an ancient lineage of kings that ruled in modern-day Kerala. Alternatively, the name Kerala may have originated in the word for coconut, keram, in the local Malayalam language (Kerala's tropical climate allows for the growth of coconuts).
