# Meghalaya is a state of India situated in the northeastern part of the country. It is bounded by Assam in the north and northeast and Bangladesh to the south and southwest. The hill town of Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya.
The ancient history of Meghalaya has revealed that there have been settlements of people in the area since the Neolithic era. These newly discovered Neolithic sites were located in areas of high elevation such as in the Garo, Khasi and Jaintia Hills and also in other neighbouring states. They were and still are the chief inhabitants of the state of Meghalaya. The history of Meghal
Meghalaya was formed by carving out two districts from the state of Assam, the United Khasi Hills and the Jaintia Hills. The north eastern regions have always been the most favourable areas for the origin of rice and it is thus mentioned that the importance of Meghalaya is through the domestication of rice.
